Reveling in Rachel Antonoff

Sunday, September 29, 2013

Rachel Antonoff is easily my favourite designer. It's the only designer my boyfriend knows the name of. That says something! I've gushed about her to him so much that he knows her by name. I have 2 of her dresses and would love to buy more. *Note - it was a very windy day, hence the flipped collar and crazy hair!

Acquiring this dress was a bit of an ordeal however. I had just gotten a job at a pizza place last summer, but it was only 2 days a week (about $160 weekly.) I was also saving up for a trip to British Columbia and was on a spending freeze. I had come across this dress in a size 6 (my size!) in on an online swap group for $250. EEK! Not so much the price, because it's totally worth it, but just the unlikelihood! I e-mailed the girl right away and asked if she would take payment installments but it had sold. NO. I was crushed. Then in February, I came across one in a size 2 on eBay. Totally not my size, and it actually had some stains down the front of it. They were even visible in the eBay photos.

I have a bit of an active imagination so I try not to think about what it could be. But... my dress! For $120! I still had no money, so I asked if she could hold it until I got paid. Then, ta da! Mine. I just have to do a lot of wiggling to get into it. In my opinion, if it zips, it fits! I don't believe in sizes. Sizes schmizes.

Crazy part was, I saw another one listed a few months later (in a size 2 again!) and I also bid on that one. I'm a wee bit of a nutter methinks.

I originally was going to style it with wine tights and Ferragamos (I literally bought the exact outfit that calivintage wore) but what's the point? I'm not breaking any new ground by wearing the exact same thing another blogger wore (although it does look really nice styled that way.) So I tried this green tights look. It's a bit Christmas-y but I think I like it. Maybe I'll wear it for the holidays. To the bar at least. This dress is way too short to wear around my family! I guess that's what happens when you buy things a couple sizes too small.

Happy One Year!!!

Saturday, September 28, 2013

It's my one year anniversary today! Not of my blog (it's still very new!) but with my boyfriend, Logan. Which makes me laugh because we always joke we wouldn't get past the 3 month mark because we are complete opposites, in literally every way you can imagine. Just about the only thing we have in common is we both like board games. In fact, that's kind of how we fell in love last summer! I'd always be hanging out at his house, and his room mate was worried about internet overages. Since we were limited with our Netflix usage, we defaulted to all the board games in the house (and there were many.) Many nights of Monopoly, Scattergories and Risk led to many candid conversations, cuddling, and eventually dating.

I thought I would post a few pics of our year together. He doesn't pose for pictures very often, so getting these shots was asking a lot of him!

Being a weiner on his birthday (Modcloth dress)

We only did a little bit of celebrating of the anniversary so far. We both get paid Monday so we are going out to dinner at our favourite pizza joint, Terra Cotta on Tuesday (they have 2 for 1 pizza! Perfect for date night.) We went out Thursday night just for a night out (and some foosball) but the Loop (our regular bar) was having their special shindigs for the university law program. They let in people who aren't in the program, but the music is all bad rock cover bands and everyone is 19. On a typical night, only half the bar is that young. It was a mostly annoying night so went home and watched Dexter and tried to digest all the Taco Bell and doughnuts we pigged out on earlier (an anniversary treat from my mom!)

Then because we are cool, we took a million selfies. Woot! Shenanigans indeed.

Challenges Ahead!

Thursday, September 26, 2013

Allo there! Hope you all have been having a good week. To explain the title a little, my boyfriend proposed a challenge to me - to cut down on my spending. At first, it was to not buy anything at all for a month, but I told him I already had some er... pending transactions. I'm notorious for spending money before I have it. Not exactly spending it, since I don't physically have it, but bidding on items on eBay or setting up deals on "for sale" groups on Facebook so that basically my entire cheque is spoken for before I get it. The challenge now is to not buy anything BESIDES that Lauren Moffatt dress for a month and if I'm able to, he'll buy me a gift card for Modcloth. Pretty sweet deal right? Except I'm already doubting myself. I feel like I don't have enough fall type outfits, not enough long sleeves. So many of my dresses are nautical themed and are just summery. Others will transition to fall with a little creativity and layering but I'm not good at being creative, ha. That's why I buy dresses - I don't have to mess with separates. An outfit is already made for me!

I also need to start experimenting with tights. It's almost like I've forgotten how since I haven't worn them in awhile. I have so many pairs (at least 40+!) and the only pair that got any action over the summer was a plain white pair that I wore to rock the 60s mod look. I decided to test run these cityscape style tights. I saw an identical pair online a few months ago and was happy to find a knock off pair at Icings.

I had gotten the dress at a place in Windsor called Priced Green. It's a nifty little store where I take my clothes rather than donating them. They pay you a dollar per pound of clothes or $2 credit and everything in the store is under $5. I essentially traded in some clothes I was getting rid of anyways for this cute little, mod style dress!

I have to laugh because some of these photos (and the last batch) my proportions look kind of strange, like I'm top heavy with really skinny legs. I think my boyfriend being a foot taller than me is doing some weird funhouse mirror tricks!

Pumped For Patterns!

Wednesday, September 25, 2013

I've been seeing some retro patterns on some other blogs and on Modcloth and it's made me realize I don't have nearly enough. I've become slightly obsessed with them because they are so cute! Especially retro type patterns done in shades of red. I wish I made more money and had less things on my to buy list. My to-buy list already includes that Lauren Moffatt dress, a birthday gift for my nephew, a baby shower gift for a friend, some money for a future double date night with friends and my (undecided as of yet) Hallowe'en costume. I don't have a lot of spending money beyond those things! Eek. How will I get some beautiful patterns in my closet?

I was able to snag this dress from Modcloth on sale and it's super cute! The little pocket and button details make it super eye catching.

I got this necklace from a vintage store in town called Penny Jane Vintage. I remember thinking it was kind of ugly but being weirdly attracted to it, like it was calling out to me ("buy me, buy me!") I ended up buying it for around $20 and I think it's the coolest thing now. It's a little face etched in a gemstone! I have to photograph the clasp next time. It's an interesting contraption for sure!

I love these shoes. There is actually a (sort of) story behind them. I found a great deal on them on eBay in two colours (the one pictured and a navy and red pair.) The problem was neither were my size! The navy pair was a size 7 and the pair here is a 7.5 (I'm a size 8 to 8.5.) I wore the navy pair once and it literally chewed off the entire back of both my heels. I only walked to the bar and sat down at a bar stool all night (I brought a pair of flats to walk home in) and it still had done me in. And the bar is only a minute walk away! I relunctantly decided to part with them after dealing with a grueling healing process for the blisters on my feet (could they even be called blisters? The sores were much bigger than an ordinary blister!) Literally showering for weeks was painful! Just the water on my feet, gah! In the end, I took them to Full Circle Vintage where I sold them on consignment. They were scooped up by the very first customer who laid eyes on them (and I congratulated myself on having good taste.) The lady, Sandy, who bought them had size 6.5 feet and they fit her perfectly... and I winced at the thought that I had worn them. I still keep second guessing if I should keep them for photo shoots. I think I might be crazy/a clothes hoarder/like to inflict pain of myself.

I meant to make a Polyvore of any kind of retro style print that caught my eye but noticed I had an over-whelming amount of red (I told you I was into that lately!) so I made a board centered around just that. Red makes up a lot of my wardrobe as is but it's mostly solid dresses. My wardrobe is mostly red, pink and black dresses with 15+ of each colour! Oopsie. But I can keep buying more in those colours, provided they are prints, right?
